Fiji Times, Saturday, May 08, 2004
The Fiji Girmit Council has set up a museum
in Lautoka to commemorate Girmit Day and to preserve the past
and treasure the present.
Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase will launch
the council's 200-page historical magazine and unveil the
Girmit plaque at the centre today.
Organiser of the celebrations, Dhijendra
Singh, said the main feature of the museum would be a Kholu -
a traditional instrument which was used to extract oil.
Mrs Qarase will open the museum and cultural
display in the afternoon while the colourful evening programme
will begin with the recital of traditional Indian musical
instruments. Mr Singh said celebrations were very significant
and the council wanted to make it memorable.
